On Thursday, October 15, 2020, Most Rev Henryk Mieczysław Jagodziński, Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana celebrated his first public Mass in the country since his appointment.
Addressing the congregation, the Apostolic Nuncio relayed the blessings and best wishes of the Holy Father, Pope Francis to the Church in Ghana.

He also expressed gratitude “to the GCBC and to the entire Church in Ghana for the warm reception” and called for the support of the Catholic Church in Ghana in the discharge of his duties as Apostolic Nuncio

The President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference (GCBC) and Archbishop of Tamale, Most Rev. Philip Naameh who delivered the homily welcomed the Nuncio and assured him of the “corporation and total support” of the Catholic Church in Ghana.

Archbishop Naameh also cautioned Catholics to “avoid all that makes us deviate from God’s plan of salvation for us.” According to him, they can do that primarily by “reflecting on the Word of God presented to us by the Church during Mass and other programs organized with the aim of helping build our faith.”

As part of the celebration, the Nuncio conferred the pallium on the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, CSSp. The pallium is a symbol of Metropolitan authority and unity with the Holy Father.

Very Rev. Fr. John Kobina Louis, on behalf of Archbishop Kwofie expressed gratitude to the Holy Father and to the Nuncio.

Most Rev. Henryk Mieczysław Jagodziński was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana on May 3, 2020. However, due to covid-19 restrictions he arrived in Ghana on September 8, 2020 and presented his letter of introduction to the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference on September 9, 2020.

He was born on January 1, 1969 and ordained a priest on June 3, 1995 and incardinated in the Diocese of Kielce, Poland.

He has served various Pontifical Representatives, including those in Belarus, Croatia, India, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. In addition, he has also worked in the Third Section of the Vatican’s Secretariat of State, the Section for Relations with States.

According to the Code of Canon law 364, a nuncio’s chief task is to strengthen bonds between the Holy See and any local church.

The Catholic Church in Ghana is over 140 years and presently has 19 Dioceses and 1 Apostolic Vicariate.
